The Wabash River bottomlands along US-41 and the river road are the wildlife pipeline into Terre Haute. Raccoons, opossums, and coyotes follow the river corridor and move into residential neighborhoods as the city grows. After high water events on the Wabash, wildlife gets displaced from the bottomlands and we see a spike in attic and crawlspace calls in the low-lying west side neighborhoods.

Indiana requires a Wildlife Control Operator (WCO) permit from Indiana DNR for nuisance wildlife removal. All 13 Indiana bat species are protected under state law. The Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) is additionally listed as federally endangered under the ESA. Raccoons, squirrels and most other nuisance species require proper trapping protocols under Indiana DNR regulation.
