Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is the most common attic intruder in Terre Haute. They're aggressive, adaptable, and highly motivated to get into your attic in the fall when they're looking for winter denning sites. The ISU campus area neighborhoods are particularly active. Grey squirrels are diurnal — active during the day — so if you hear thumping and rolling in the attic on a weekday morning, this is your most likely culprit.
Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) is larger than the Grey and tends to be more suburban. The newer neighborhoods on the east side of Terre Haute near Rose-Hulman see consistent Fox squirrel pressure. Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is the one homeowners always get wrong. Flying squirrels are nocturnal. They're small, they live in colonies, and they sound like mice scratching in the walls at night. I've pulled thirty flying squirrels out of a single attic in an older ISU-area home. They are very common in the heavily-treed older neighborhoods, and they are a colony animal — where there is one, there are many more.
