Sullivan is a small county seat about 25 miles south of Terre Haute on US-41 and SR-54. It is rural Indiana at its most straightforward — a small-town square, older residential streets surrounding it, and a lot of farmhouse properties out on the county roads. The wildlife pressure here is different from the city in some ways and identical in others.
The farmhouses and older homes out on the Sullivan County roads are some of the most bat-colonized structures I work on. Old barns and farmhouses with decades of undisturbed attic space are prime roosting habitat. Big Brown Bats set up large colonies in these structures and use them year after year. Bat colonies in farmhouses and older homes. This is the primary call I get from Sullivan County. Big Brown Bat colonies in farmhouse attics can number in the hundreds. Indiana DNR restricts bat exclusion May 15–August 15. Inspection now, exclusion starting August 15 — that is the plan. The Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) is federally endangered and within the Sullivan County range. We apply ESA protocols on every bat job in this county.
Raccoons. Sullivan County's creek corridors and wooded rural areas push raccoons into farm buildings and home attics regularly. Open grain storage and uncapped outbuilding vents are common entry situations in rural Sullivan County that we don't see as much in the city. We trap, relocate, and seal.
Squirrels in farmhouses. Flying squirrels are very active in the older farmhouses throughout Sullivan County. These are the calls where a homeowner has been hearing "mice" for years and it turns out to be a 30-animal flying squirrel colony. Grey squirrels in town near the older residential streets. Both situations are handled with trapping and attic exclusion.
Skunks and opossums. More common in rural Sullivan County than in the city. Deck and crawlspace denning, farm building infiltration. We trap and remove under Indiana DNR regulations.
